Classic Croque Monsieur
The Croque Monsieur is an essential French sandwich, grilled to perfection with ham, melted cheese, and a touch of béchamel sauce. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, it is the perfect snack or meal for any time of day.

- 8 slices white sandwich bread
- 8 slices deli ham
- 7 oz Gruyère cheese, shredded
- 3.5 tbsp butter (divided)
- 1 cup milk
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 pinch pepper
- 1 pinch nutmeg

Prepare the béchamel: melt 1.75 tbsp of butter in a saucepan, add the flour, and cook for 2 minutes. Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.

Assemble the sandwiches: spread a little béchamel on each slice of bread, then add a slice of ham and a portion of the cheese. Cover with a second slice of bread.

Heat a skillet or griddle with the remaining butter over medium heat. Grill the sandwich for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. The cheese should be melted on the inside.

💡 Chef's Tip
For a Croque Madame version, add a fried egg on top. You can also use a sandwich press for more even cooking. Use high-quality cheese for the best results.
