Classic Beef Lasagna

- 1.5 lbs ground beef
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 12 lasagna noodles, broken into pieces
- 15 oz ricotta cheese
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the chopped onion until the onion is tender. Drain off any excess grease.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.

Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, water, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Meanwhile, cook the broken lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.

In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, and Parmesan cheese. Mix well.

Spread a thin layer of the meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Arrange one-third of the cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce.
