🛒 Ingredients

15 servings

15
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3 to 4 cups (360–480 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 3–4 tablespoons whole milk or heavy cream
  • 1½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • Pinch of fine salt

Directions

  1. 1

Beat the softened butter in a stand mixer or with a hand mixer on medium speed for 3–4 minutes until pale, fluffy and visibly increased in volume.

  2. 2

Reduce to low speed and gradually add 3 cups of sifted powdered sugar, followed by the milk, vanilla extract and salt. Once combined, increase to medium-high and beat for 2 more minutes until light and airy.

  3. 3

Taste and adjust: add more powdered sugar for a stiffer, pipeable consistency, or an extra splash of milk to loosen the frosting.

  4. 4

Transfer to a piping bag fitted with your favourite tip and generously frost your fully cooled cupcakes.

💡 Chef's Tip

Always use room-temperature butter — cold butter won't emulsify and warm butter will turn greasy. For a brighter white frosting, swap milk for heavy cream and beat on high for one extra minute.
