  • 4 cups (1 litre) whole milk
  • 1 can (14 oz / 397 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 7 oz (200 g) butter cookies or shortbread
  • Sugar to taste
  • ¾ cup (180 ml) heavy cream

Directions

  1. 1

In a cold saucepan, whisk together the milk and cornstarch until fully dissolved with no lumps.

  2. 2

Add sugar to taste and stir to combine.

  3. 3

Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens into a smooth custard.

  4. 4

Reduce heat, pour in the condensed milk, and keep stirring until fully incorporated.

  5. 5

Continue mixing until the cream is silky and uniform, then remove from heat.

  6. 6

In a glass baking dish, arrange a single layer of cookies flat side up.

  7. 7

Spread a generous layer of warm custard over the cookies and repeat the layers.

  8. 8

Finish with a final layer of custard on top.

  9. 9

Drizzle the heavy cream evenly over the surface.

  10. 10

Allow to cool at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

💡 Chef's Tip

Flavour the custard with a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon for extra depth. This dessert is even better made the night before — the cookies soften beautifully into the cream.
