🛒 Ingredients

2 servings

2
  • 2 steaks (about 5 oz / 150 g each)
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced into rings
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • ½ cup (125 ml) water
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions

  1. 1

Season the steaks generously on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a skillet over high heat and cook each steak 2–3 minutes per side to your preferred doneness.

  2. 2

Transfer the steaks to a plate and tent loosely with foil while you prepare the sauce — resting keeps them juicy.

  3. 3

In the same skillet over medium heat, sauté the onion rings until golden and tender, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more.

  4. 4

Pour in the water and scrape up all the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Simmer for 3–4 minutes until the onions are very soft.

  5. 5

Remove from heat and stir in the mayonnaise until you have a smooth, creamy sauce.

  6. 6

Spoon the onion cream generously over the steaks and serve immediately with mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or crusty bread.

💡 Chef's Tip

Stir a teaspoon of Dijon mustard into the mayonnaise before adding it to the pan for extra depth. Never bring the sauce to a boil after adding mayo or it may split.
