By Marie Lefebvre · Updated October 12, 2026

Jabuticaba is a rare Brazilian berry with deep, grape-like flavours unlike anything you have tasted before. This easy homemade jam captures its rich purple intensity — perfect on toast, swirled into yogurt, or served alongside aged cheeses.

🛒 Ingredients

9 servings

9
  • 500 g (1.1 lb) granulated sugar
  • 1 kg (2.2 lb) fresh jabuticaba berries
  • 1 litre (4 cups) filtered water
  • Juice of half a lemon

Directions

  1. 1

Rinse the jabuticaba berries thoroughly under cold running water and discard any stems.

  2. 2

Add berries and water to a blender and blend on high for 1–2 minutes until completely smooth.

  3. 3

Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth, pressing firmly to extract all the juice. Discard skins and seeds.

  4. 4

Pour the strained juice into a heavy-bottomed saucepan, add the sugar and lemon juice, and stir to combine.

  5. 5

Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sugar is fully dissolved.

  6. 6

Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and cook for 30–40 minutes, skimming any foam, until the jam reaches setting point.

  7. 7

Ladle hot jam into sterilised glass jars, seal tightly, and invert upside down until completely cool.

💡 Chef's Tip

To test the set, place a small plate in the freezer for 5 minutes, then drop a teaspoon of jam onto it — if it wrinkles when pushed with your finger, the jam is ready. Lemon juice adds natural pectin for a firmer, glossier texture.
