  • 4 whole eggs (whites and yolks separated)
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • 2½ cups (300 g) all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 1 cup (200 ml) whole milk
  • 3 heaping tablespoons margarine (about 75 g)
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • A few drops of vanilla extract
  • 1 can (14 oz / 395 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 7 oz (200 g) heavy cream, drained
  • 1 cup (250 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 10 tablespoons powdered milk
  • Melted dark or white chocolate for coating
  • Chocolate candies or bonbons for the filling (optional)

Directions

  1. 1

    Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). Grease and flour a 9-inch (24 cm) round cake pan.

  2. 2

Beat egg whites to stiff peaks using an electric mixer. Gradually add sugar and beat for 2 more minutes.

  3. 3

Add egg yolks, sifted flour, milk, margarine and vanilla extract. Beat until a smooth, lump-free batter forms.

  4. 4

Add baking powder and beat at the lowest speed for exactly 30 seconds to keep the batter light.

  5. 5

Pour into the prepared pan and bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack.

  6. 6

Make the frosting: beat the drained heavy cream with the softened butter until light and airy.

  7. 7

Add condensed milk, then sprinkle in the powdered milk gradually. Beat for another 2–3 minutes until thick and creamy.

  8. 8

Slice the cooled cake in half horizontally. Spread frosting on the bottom layer and add chocolate pieces or candies.

  9. 9

Place the top layer back, coat the entire cake with remaining frosting and drizzle with melted chocolate to finish.

💡 Chef's Tip

Chill the butter and heavy cream for 30 minutes before whipping for a firmer, fluffier frosting. Fresh strawberries between the layers make a beautiful and refreshing variation.
