  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1 cup whole milk (for the glaze)
  • 6 heaping tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 350 °F (180 °C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. 2

Beat eggs, softened butter, and sugar together for 3–4 minutes until light and creamy.

  3. 3

Gradually fold in the flour, alternating with milk, until you get a smooth, lump-free batter, then stir in the baking powder.

  4. 4

Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool.

  5. 5

Heat milk in a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk in cocoa powder and stir continuously until the glaze is smooth and slightly thickened.

  6. 6

Pour the warm chocolate glaze over the cooled cake, spreading evenly, and let it set for 15 minutes before slicing.

💡 Chef's Tip

For extra richness, stir a knob of butter into the glaze off the heat before pouring. The cake tastes even better the next day as the flavours develop.
