🛒 Ingredients

6 servings

6
  • 2 cups raw white rice
  • 300 g ground beef
  • 1 can (300 g) sweet corn and peas
  • 200 g mozzarella, coarsely grated
  • 100 g bacon, diced
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 sachet tomato sauce (about 300 ml)

Directions

  1. 1

Make the sauce: brown the ground beef with the chopped onion, then stir in the tomato sauce and your favourite seasonings. Go easy on the salt and keep the sauce fairly loose.

  2. 2

Preheat the oven to 180 °C (350 °F) and lightly oil a large baking dish.

  3. 3

Layer everything in the dish in this order: one cup of raw rice, the chopped onion, the corn and peas with their liquid, then the saucy beef.

  4. 4

Top with the second cup of raw rice, the grated mozzarella and finally the diced bacon.

  5. 5

Pour one cup of boiling water over the top — the rice should be just covered.

  6. 6

Cover with foil and bake for 40 minutes, uncovering for the last 10 minutes to brown the top. Rest for 5 minutes before serving.

💡 Chef's Tip

Boiling water is the trick: poured on top, it cooks the raw rice right in the oven. Keep the tomato sauce loose or the rice stays crunchy. Foil gives even cooking — uncover at the end for a golden gratin. Great with a green salad and a little hot sauce.
