🛒 Ingredients

5 servings

5
  • 400 g (14 oz) ground beef
  • 10 medium potatoes, boiled
  • 4 tbsp cream cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter or margarine
  • 1 can (400 g) tomato sauce
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Dried oregano
  • Fresh or dried rosemary
  • Olive oil

Directions

  1. 1

Combine ground beef, minced garlic, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, oregano and rosemary in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly and shape into golf-ball-sized meatballs.

  2. 2

Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides for about 6 minutes, then pour in the tomato sauce. Simmer on low heat for 10 minutes.

  3. 3

Mash the boiled potatoes with cream cheese, butter, and salt until smooth and creamy. Adjust seasoning to taste.

  4. 4

Preheat oven to 400 °F (200 °C). Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the bottom of a greased baking dish.

  5. 5

Arrange the meatballs and sauce on top of the mash. Cover generously with shredded mozzarella and a pinch of oregano.

  6. 6

Bake for 15–20 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly with golden spots. Serve hot straight from the dish.

💡 Chef's Tip

For extra flavour, add a handful of fresh basil to the tomato sauce while it simmers. Leftovers reheat beautifully in the oven at 180 °C for 10 minutes.
