Soft Oat Meatballs

By Marie Lefebvre · Updated October 31, 2026

These homemade meatballs are wonderfully tender thanks to rolled oats, which keep them moist and light throughout cooking. Bake them golden in the oven for a simple weeknight dinner, or simmer them in tomato sauce for a heartier meal. Budget-friendly and loved by the whole family.

🛒 Ingredients

4 servings

4
  • 300 g (10.5 oz) ground beef, or beef and pork mix
  • 1/2 onion, grated
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 1/2 cup (50 g) rolled oats
  • 1 tomato, peeled, seeded and finely chopped
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Dried oregano, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Directions

  1. 1

In a large bowl, combine ground meat, grated onion, crushed garlic, rolled oats and chopped tomato. Season generously with salt, pepper and oregano, then mix well with your hands until evenly combined.

  2. 2

With damp hands, roll the mixture into small balls about the size of a walnut, using roughly 1/2 tablespoon of mixture per meatball.

  3. 3

Preheat oven to 200 °C (390 °F). Arrange meatballs on a lightly oiled baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and bake for 15–20 minutes until nicely browned all over.

  4. 4

For a saucy version, pour one can of tomato sauce with 1/2 cup water into a saucepan. Add the meatballs, cover and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes, stirring gently to avoid breaking them.

  5. 5

Serve hot over pasta or rice, or alongside a fresh green salad.

💡 Chef's Tip

Wet your hands before rolling the meatballs to prevent sticking. Keeping them small and uniform ensures even cooking and a juicier result.
