🛒 Ingredients

6 servings

6
  • 2 lbs (1 kg) ground beef or beef/pork blend
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 bunch chives and flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 5 oz (150 g) smoked bacon strips or lardons
  • 2 carrots, cut into sticks
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs, halved lengthwise
  • 4 slices cooked ham
  • 4 slices mozzarella or shredded Emmental
  • 3.5 oz (100 g) green beans, steamed
  • Aluminum foil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). In a large bowl, thoroughly combine the ground beef with the onion soup mix, chopped onion, chives, parsley and olive oil. Season generously with salt and pepper.

  2. 2

Lay a large sheet of aluminum foil on a work surface. Spread the meat mixture into a rectangle about ½ inch (1 cm) thick, leaving a 1-inch border on all sides.

  3. 3

Layer the filling over the meat: arrange ham slices, mozzarella, hard-boiled eggs, green beans and carrot sticks evenly, keeping the edges clear.

  4. 4

Using the foil to help, carefully roll the meat into a tight log. Press and seal the ends firmly with your hands to close any gaps. Wrap tightly in the foil.

  5. 5

Bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil, top with bacon strips and a few carrot sticks, then return to the oven for 8–10 minutes until the surface is golden and slightly caramelized.

  6. 6

Rest for 5 minutes before slicing into thick rounds. Serve with creamy mashed potatoes or steamed white rice.

💡 Chef's Tip

Chill the shaped roll in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before baking for cleaner, neater slices. Customize the filling with olives, roasted peppers, sautéed mushrooms or any cheese you like.
