🛒 Ingredients

6 servings

6
  • 600 g (1.3 lb) ground beef
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 6 slices cooked ham
  • 6 slices Swiss or mild melting cheese
  • Dried oregano to taste
  • Black pepper to taste

Directions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 200 °C / 390 °F. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with the onion soup mix, egg, breadcrumbs, and Dijon mustard. Season with black pepper and mix until fully combined.

  2. 2

Lay a large sheet of aluminium foil flat on a clean surface. Place the meat mixture on it and press it into a rectangle about 30 × 20 cm (12 × 8 in) with even thickness.

  3. 3

Layer the ham slices evenly over the meat, then top with the cheese slices. Sprinkle with dried oregano.

  4. 4

Using the foil as a guide, carefully roll the meat into a tight, compact log. Seal the foil around it, folding in the ends.

  5. 5

Place on a baking tray and bake for 20 minutes, still fully wrapped in foil.

  6. 6

Open the foil and bake for a further 8–10 minutes until the outside is golden brown.

  7. 7

Rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve with roasted potatoes or a fresh green salad.

💡 Chef's Tip

Leftover slices make excellent sandwiches the next day. For a smoky twist, use smoked ham and swap Swiss cheese for provolone.
